The Beauty Of Deism
The concept of “divine energies” (energeia in Greek) is a central theological idea in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, particularly as articulated by St. Gregory Palamas in the 14th century. It seeks to explain how human beings can know, experience, and participate in God without compromising His transcendent and unknowable essence.
Divine Essence and Energies:
Essence: The essence of God refers to His inner being, which is utterly transcendent, incomprehensible, and inaccessible to created beings. No one can directly know or experience God’s essence.
Energies: The energies of God, however, are His actions, operations, and presence as He manifests Himself in the world. These energies are fully God, distinct from His essence but not separate from Him. Through the energies, God interacts with creation, reveals Himself, and enables humans to participate in His divine life.
